Six and Younger Programs
Over the last eight years, The Oakville Academy for the Arts has revolutionized the delivery of
age appropriate programs in the GTA.
The Academy provides a choice from over sixty classes a week that are specifically designed for children six and under.
The
commitment to providing the best opportunity in terms of faculty, facility, and
diversity has led to
the largest student body of this age group in the area.
The Academy’s focus on providing an exceptional experience for little ones has
been embraced by the community and the most liberal refund policy allows
children to explore the arts without financial risk to parents.
Below is
a list of our programs.
Year End Recitals:
All of our programs end with a
year end celebration to mark the individual learning and progress of our
students. The Oakville Academy for the Arts is proud to have revolutionized the
typical year end recital at the average dance school. Recognizing that children
in this age group have a limited attention span, and allowing for the peace of
mind of their parents, we have a unique junior recital set up. While our senior
students perform at the state of the art Living Arts Centre, our “babies”
perform locally in a 1 hour show in a quaint yet special theatre where they are
gently introduced to the art of performance. The facility is carefully monitored
so we can ensure a positive experience for both
children and parents. Due to the scope of the Academy, there are normally
numerous shows and they take place in the first few weeks of June. Our junior
fine arts students and musical theatre students similarly finish their year with
their own unique shows.

Pre-Dance Ages
2 ˝ - 3˝
A magical introduction to the world of dance that is
taught by University qualified instructors passionate about this art
form and specializing in this age group. The approach to making these
classes fun while providing an articulate beginning to dance foundations
as led to the programs overwhelming success. Dancers will skip, learn to
point their toes, turn, balance and develop their musicality and
physical awareness. Balloons, hoola hoops, teddy bears etc, are used to
keep students focused and challenged. An open door policy is the
standard at the Oakville Academy so you are welcome to join us until
your little one is comfortable. You can watch your child through our
windows and view their progress at our viewing weeks through the year.
As part of the registration, each dancer receives a pink dance skirt
with our compliments. Our year end celebration of their learning takes
place in the form of a Tea Party at the studio where little dancers will
perform for friends and family. Then be treated to sandwiches, treats
and refreshments after their performance. Class space fills up quickly –
so don’t hesitate to register your little dancer so she does not miss
out.

is made for kids who love being creative and artistic. We will explore a variety
of projects in order to keep our ideas flowing while learning and expanding on

constant motion and in need of new adventures, each class will explore two
different projects related to each other. We will be kept busy and creatively
stimulated while we learn and explore ART. We will use a variety of surfaces and
mediums throughout the year, starting with pencil and pastel and moving into
paint and sculpture. Our projects will include, watercolour painting, pastel
drawing, clay sculpting, collage, building and designing, pen and ink, paper
mache, still life drawing, portraiture and many more exciting projects.
Musical Theatre for
Children Ages
5 to 7
Sat
11:45 – 1:15
This program
is a fun and educational way to introduce a combination of music, dance and
drama into your child’s life in an integrated manner. While opening
their eyes to the wide aspects of the arts and participating in fun, educational
activities they will develop fundamental skills in all three aspects of musical
theatre. A group vocal warm up and lesson will introduce correct
breathing, vowel placement, pitch control and some basic music theory.
Our drama sessions will consist of scene work and improvisational games designed
to spark your child’s imagination. Basic jazz and choreography are
introduced to develop a connection between the musical and physical worlds of
song. Students will use their newfound skills to learn several different
scenes and songs, which will be performed at an end of the year recital.
Our Musical Theatre program is designed to introduce young students to the world
of musical theatre, while focusing on group work and building self-confidence on
stage in a fun, structured manner.
Vocal
and Instrumental
Instruction
The Oakville
Academy for the Arts' goal is to provide a comprehensive and fun music program
for students of all ages. While instilling the benefits of formal theory and
technique training, the Academy strives to ensure that all students enjoy their
sessions. The Academy offers a variety of stylized classes (Royal Conservatory,
Jazz, Pop, etc.) while promoting performance and group work to share all newly
learned talents. We feel that music training can be a very solitary activity
particularly for today’s children and know from experience that children relish
the opportunity to participate with other young musicians as often as possible.

Ages: 3*- 6
(participants must be 3 by the end

The Afternoon Arts Adventure
program at the Oakville Academy for the Arts will take children ages 3*
- 6 through a magical introduction to the Arts. Young learners
will have the option of joining a single Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday
session or a combination of two or more classes. This unique and
specialized program will provide opportunities for young artists to work
and experiment with abundant graphic arts media with a practicing visual
artist, explore ballet and jazz dance fundamentals with a professional
Academy Dance Instructor during a daily 30 minute class, enjoy a healthy
snack, make music with our OAA Primary Music Specialist and have free
playtime in our well equipped studio Preschool classroom.
Afternoon Arts Adventure students
arrive for program at 12:30 and are dismissed in the front foyer at 3:30
p.m.
Participants for this program must
be 3 years of age or older by the end of June 2010 and be fully
toilet-trained. We are unable to make exceptions to this policy.
Visual Arts Component: A Core Studio Approach
During the school year, children
will use the visual arts to explore ideas of interest and meaning for
them. Philosophically, the Afternoon Arts Adventure Program views art
as an important language to be utilized as a vehicle for expressing
feelings, ideas and emerging beliefs about the world we live in.
On a daily basis, the Preschool studio classroom will be arranged with
core fine art areas through which the children will move - exploring the
art media available at each station. The core areas offered daily
will be: painting, collage, drawing and sculpture. From week to
week, the art materials offered within the core areas will change.
Fore example: The initial week's art may be tempera paint,
construction paper and matte board bases, artist quality pencil crayons
and potter's clay. The following week, the core areas may include:
water colour paint, fabric, scissors and glue, chalk pastels and
plasticene. Throughout all exploration, fundamental elements of
colour and design will be reinforced in developmentally appropriate and
captivating ways - using both familiar art materials and artist-quality
materials. As in any high-quality studio experience for young
children, this program will be strongly process-based as opposed to a
take-home craft approach. Students will be encouraged to select a
station that holds appeal for them and will move to a new station when
they have fully explored what that particular station has to offer.
Students may not necessarily work at each station each day, particularly
if they are deeply engrossed in the art media at one core area.
Children will be encouraged to gain mastery through the repetition and
use of consistent media like paint, paper, mark-making implements, dough
and clay over time - it is through this approach that young artists
begin to build upon former skills and become deeply competent and
creative!
Dance Component
Within the context of each daily
session, participants will take part in a 30 minute dance class.
Each session will blend primary ballet fundamentals with age-appropriate
up-tempo jazz elements. Both dance genres will emphasize
expressiveness, simple floor routines, body sense as well as rhythm and
co-ordination.
Music Component
During each session, students will
have the opportunity to take part in a lively music class facilitated by
the Academy's Primary Music Specialist. During these 30 minute
sessions, children will explore rhythm instruments, sing in
accompaniment to one of our many pianos, develop auditory discrimination
skills, experience a variety of musical genres, learn new songs and move
their bodies in thrilling and creative ways!
End of the Year Tea Party Recital
At the conclusion of the year, in
June, the Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday Afternoon Arts Adventure
classes will host a combined Tea Party Recital for family and friends in
our primary on-site dance studio. At this time, we will celebrate
the culmination of much hard work and exploration by sharing a charming
dance presentation, vocal performance and visual arts display.
This event offers our students the perfect opportunity to showcase their
mastered skills while providing family members the opportunity to take
many photographs and to celebrate the determination and efforts of our
special artists!
